Can You Get Around a Physical App Blocker? Honestly, Yes

Can you bypass a physical app blocker? The honest answer
Yes. Any block can be beaten if you want it badly enough. What changes is the price. A software blocker goes down in two taps because the key lives on your phone. A physical blocker like the Monk makes you get up and scan a disc. That walk is what kills the automatic gesture.
Why you get around every software blocker
Because the key lives inside the phone. You set the limit, you know the code, and lifting it costs two taps and no effort at all.
You know the scene. You turn on Screen Time, put a 30-minute limit on Instagram, and three days later you tap "Ignore Limit" without even reading it. Your willpower didn't fail. The design did: in every software block, the key is inside the cell. You set the code, you know how to remove it, and the button to do it sits two taps from the impulse.
Third-party blocking apps have the same problem in a different costume. You can pause them, delete them, or grant yourself "just five minutes" from the very phone you're trying to slow down. The limit and the temptation share a screen, and in that fight the temptation is playing at home.
Each slip also costs more than you'd guess. Gloria Mark, a researcher at the University of California, Irvine, has measured that after an interruption it takes about 23 minutes on average to get your focus back. "Just a quick look" doesn't cost you a look. It costs you the next half hour.
If you want Apple's system taken apart piece by piece, we did that in why Screen Time doesn't work as a blocker.
What changes when the barrier is physical
The key leaves the phone. To reopen a blocked app you have to scan a physical disc, and nobody does that by accident.
The Monk is an NFC disc the size of an AirTag, magnetic, with no battery. From its app you choose which apps get blocked on your iPhone. To reopen any of them the normal route is one: hold the phone to the disc and scan. No ignore button, no code to fiddle with, no soft unlock. The one exception is deliberate — the app carries three emergency unlocks, and they're finite. A spare key, not a back door.
That changes the geometry of the problem. The key no longer lives inside the cell. It lives wherever you left it. If the disc is in the kitchen and you're on the sofa, there's a whole hallway between the impulse and the app. Restarting the iPhone doesn't clear the block, it works offline, and it doesn't depend on you behaving well. It depends on where an object is.
There's research behind that distance. Ward and colleagues showed in 2017, in the study known as "Brain Drain" (University of Texas at Austin), that simply having your phone on the table eats into the mental capacity you have available, even face down and silent. Moving the key away isn't a willpower trick. It's closing a tab your brain had left open.
The full mechanics are in how to block apps on iPhone you can't unblock.
Can you bypass the Monk? The holes, one by one
There's no perfect block on iOS and we're not going to pretend there is. Here is every way out, and what happens with each one.
We're telling you all of it because the honesty is the argument. If you're going to pay €54.95 for a blocker, you deserve to know exactly where its seams are.
What if I open Instagram in Safari? You can. There is no block on iOS that's impossible to get around, and anyone promising you otherwise is selling smoke. But look at what just happened: you had to decide, open the browser, type the address and log in. That isn't autopilot any more, it's a conscious choice. What the Monk kills is the thumb that opens the app on its own.
What about the emergency unlocks? You get 3 in total, for the life of the product. They don't refill every month: once they're gone, they're gone. They exist for a real emergency, not as a back door, and the fact that there are so few is exactly what makes you think twice.
What if I delete the Monk app? That's what Strict Mode is for: it stops the Monk app being deleted while a blocking session is running. With it on, the only way out is still the disc.
What if I restart the iPhone? The block is still there when it boots. Turning it off and on again resets nothing.
What if I leave the disc at home? Those apps stay blocked until you get back. It sounds like a flaw and it's the opposite: for once, laziness is on your side.
The right question to ask before you buy
Don't ask whether it's impossible to bypass. Ask how much friction sits between the impulse and the app. That's where it's decided.
"Is it impossible to get around?" is the wrong question, because the answer will always be no. No system on iOS can promise you that, not Monk, not anyone. The useful question is the other one: how much friction is there between the impulse and the app?
With a software block, the answer is two taps and zero seconds of thought. With a physical barrier, the answer is get off the sofa, walk to another room, pick up the disc and scan. Somewhere along that route the impulse usually dies on its own, because an impulse can't survive a walk down the hall.
We won't put a number on how much time you'd get back, because ours would be a number about us and we'd rather you didn't buy on it. What we can tell you is the mechanism: people stop opening Instagram without noticing they've opened it. Whatever that's worth in your day, it's yours to measure.
Nobody scans a disc by accident. That's the whole point.
What using the Monk is actually like
You get a Monk, you choose which apps to block, and you scan the disc to unblock when you decide to. No subscription and no battery.
Three steps, no small print:
- You get the Monk. One payment of €54.95 including VAT, no subscription, lifetime updates.
- You choose what to block. Block Mode (you bar the apps you pick) or Allow Mode (only the ones you need stay alive). You can schedule sessions — every night from 9pm to 8am, say — and during a session, opening a blocked app also means scanning.
- You scan to unblock. When you decide, not when the impulse decides for you. Hold the iPhone to the disc and that's it.
Things worth knowing before you buy: it works on iPhone only (iOS 16.2 or later, from the XS onwards), and it doesn't work on an iPad. There is no Android version and we have no date to promise you. Calls and texts are never blocked, so people can always reach you. It works offline. And if you're using it with your kids, there's remote scanning, so you can manage their blocks without chasing them round the house. Full details are on the Monk's product page.
Common questions
Can I unblock apps without the disc?
Three times in the life of the disc, and then never. There's no soft unlock — no ignore button, no code to type — so reopening a blocked app normally means scanning the physical disc. The exception is the 3 emergency unlocks Monk includes in the app, and they're finite: once you've used them, that's it. That's a design decision, not an oversight. A spare key you can use three times is not the same thing as a free escape button, and if it were, the Monk would be one more willpower app.
What happens if I restart the iPhone?
Nothing, and that's the short answer. The block is still active when the iPhone boots again. Powering off doesn't wipe the session or reset anything, and the Monk needs no battery and no connection to keep a block in place. The old restart trick, which does work on some software blockers, gets you nowhere here.
What if I delete the Monk app?
Strict Mode closes that door: while a blocking session is running, it stops the Monk app being deleted from the iPhone. If you know you'd try it in a weak moment, turn it on and forget about it. Without Strict Mode the app can be deleted like any other, so if your standard is not being able to get round your own limit, that's your setting.
Can I use Instagram through Safari?
Yes. There's no block on iOS that's impossible to bypass, and we'd rather say so before you buy than after. What dies with the Monk is the automatic gesture: the thumb that opens the app without you deciding anything. Going in through Safari takes wanting to, typing the address and logging in, and that conscious decision is the one you almost never end up making.
Take the key out of the phone
If your standard for buying is "something I can't get around", the honest answer isn't cleverer software. It's taking the key out of the phone. €54.95, one payment, gets you the disc, the app, lifetime updates and 30 days to send it back on top of your statutory rights. If the hallway between the sofa and the disc changes nothing for you, return it and that's that.
