A physical device to stop using your phone: how the barrier works

Monk · 6 min read

A physical device to stop using your phone is an object you put between yourself and the apps that eat your day. Instead of arguing with settings inside the phone, you move the decision out of it. No magic, no bottled willpower. A change of location. If you've tried everything and keep drifting back, this explains why an object does what software keeps failing to do.

Why a physical device to stop using your phone beats another app

Every app that promises to control your phone use has the same flaw baked in: it lives inside the phone that's got you. You set a limit, then you lift it yourself, because you know the passcode and the decision stays in your hand at the worst possible moment. An object outside the phone changes the maths. To get back in you walk over, hold the phone against it, scan. That small effort is what interrupts the automatic reach.

A blocking app

Lives inside the phone. You set it up, you switch it off. It asks you nicely not to go in, and at 4pm on a Tuesday you say yes.

A physical object

Lives outside the phone. To get back in you have to scan it. It doesn't ask nicely. It makes you actually decide.

Software asks you not to go in. An object makes you go and get it.

How Monk works, step by step

Monk is that object: a small disc with NFC inside, the same chip your bank card taps with. You leave it in the room where you work or live.

  1. You pair it with the app on your iPhone.
  2. You choose which apps sit behind the barrier and which stay open: email, banking, whatever you actually need.
  3. You leave the disc where it does the most good: your desk, the hallway at home, the car.
  4. When you open a blocked app, it doesn't open. You hold your iPhone against the Monk and scan. That's the only way through.

There's no soft unlock inside the app: no ignore-for-today button, no code, no five more minutes. There are three emergency unlocks and they run out. The scan is the entrance, which is why there's nothing to negotiate with at 11pm.

Worth knowing first: the opening three days are the uncomfortable ones. Your hand keeps going for the phone, nothing happens, and it feels stupid. By the end of week one, the reaching mostly stops.

Where you put it (and why that decides your day)

The spot you choose does most of the work. On the desk, it catches you mid-task, at the moment you'd otherwise start scrolling without noticing. By the front door, it puts a line between the working day and the evening. In the car, it keeps your eyes up. You decide where the border goes.

Common questions

It's just an NFC disc. Why pay for that?

The disc is the cheap part. You're paying for the system around it: the app that decides what gets blocked, the rule that the scan is the only way in, and the absence of a shortcut for weak moments. A blank NFC sticker does none of that.

Does it work on Android?

No. Monk is iPhone only, iOS 16.2 and up. There is no Android version and no date for one, and it doesn't work on iPad either. If you're on Android, it isn't for you, and we'd rather say so here than apologise later.

What if I lose it, or leave it at home?

You manage sessions from the app, and since it's a one-off purchase, replacing a disc costs you a disc. The barrier is built around your routine, not designed to strand you.

Can I get around it if I really need to?

Yes, if you're determined. There's no soft unlock in the app, only three finite emergency unlocks, but iOS has limits and nobody can honestly sell you a sealed box. What Monk removes is the effortless way in. Getting past it takes deliberate steps, and by the time you've taken them you're making a choice instead of a twitch.

The decision, outside the phone

This is the one we make

A disc you leave where you work or live. You pick the apps that go behind it, and to get back in you scan it. The phone stops being a reflex and goes back to being a tool.
