Apple's Focus modes provide another layer of digital boundary-setting that works well with Monk. By integrating the two systems, you can create a comprehensive distraction-free environment. Here's how to set up and use Focus modes alongside Monk:
Set up custom Focus modes
Go to Settings > Focus and tap the + button to create a new Focus. Name it something like 'Deep Work' or 'Study'. You can choose a specific icon and color to make it easily recognizable. Configure which apps and people can notify you during this Focus mode.
Customize Focus settings
In your Focus settings, tap on the Focus you created and configure 'Focus Filters'. These can dim your lock screen, hide notification badges, and filter content in Apple apps. You can also set a custom home screen that shows only the apps you need during focus time.
Integrate with Monk using Shortcuts
Create a Shortcut that activates both Monk mode and your Focus mode simultaneously. Open the Shortcuts app, create a new shortcut, and add two actions: 'Start Monk Mode' and 'Set Focus'. Configure both actions with your preferred settings. This shortcut will enable both systems with a single tap.
Create a Focus filter for Monk
For advanced integration, you can create an App Focus Filter for Monk. In Settings > Focus > [Your Focus] > Focus Filters, tap Add Filter and select Monk. This allows the Monk app to adapt its behavior when this Focus is active, potentially enabling stricter blocking or different settings.
Benefits of dual protection
Using both systems provides complementary benefits: Monk offers stronger app blocking through Screen Time integration, while Focus provides notification management, home screen customization, and status sharing that lets others know you're focusing. Together, they create a more comprehensive distraction shield.
